May is full of things to do: happenings at the dock, a chamber music dinner and a competition about the best summer menu in town!

The event called “Satamassa tavataan” is being held on the 20th of May between 4 am 8 pm at the Pakkahuone dock in the Southern Harbor of Helsinki, behind the covered Market Hall. The event is a part of the annual European Maritime Day which is celebrated throughout Europe.

The marine event offers a setting for teams to show off their skills and talents in different races. The teams that consist of two persons compete in the following races: ropeway, log sawing and buoy hopping.

The public has the possibility to try steering radio controlled boats and making sailor’s knots. Furthermore ice breaker Turso and tugboat Alfons Hålans have open doors.

In the tent of the Environment Centre one can get acquainted with an exhibition about the future of the Baltic Sea. In the Makasiini terminal on the other hand there is an exhibition with drawings of harbors.

The border guard’s helicopter has a saving operation demonstration at 4.30 pm. The mounted police will also appear. Salmon soup will be served to the first 400 guests. You can find the schedule for the day at the website of the port of Helsinki.

Concerning restaurant news, it’s worth mentioning that the internet service Viinikassi, specialized on recommendations of wines, in collaboration with restaurant Mange Sud organizes a fun competition where one can vote for the best summer menu in town. As price one can win a summer dinner in the restaurant Mange Sud for oneself and five friends. The voting ends on the 31st of May and the winning menu will be served in the restaurant directly from the next day until the end of August.

Besides this, Mange Sud organizes a theme evening the 23rd of May where you can listen to chamber music while you have dinner. The concert is held between the starter and main course. This will be the last chamber music evening of the spring, but the chamber music dinners will continue again in the fall.

Each Saturday Mange Sud organizes cheerful so called market menus between 1 and 4 pm, which can easily be combined to e.g. Saturday shopping sprees. The menu includes fried scallops or Caesar salad and roasted chicken breast as starter, grilled crab or baby lamb skewers as main course and strawberry tart or house ice cream or sorbet as dessert.
