With October comes the annual Helsinki Baltic Herring Fair - the oldest traditional event in Helsinki, having been held since 1743.

Traditional salted and pickled herring together with a wide variety of exotic herring marinades can be found alongside delicious archipelago bread and clothing made from the wool of the archipelago sheep.

Lord Mayor Jussi Pajunen opens the market on Sunday 2 October at 11am. The opening day programme continues until 4pm with music, chefs preparing herring dishes on stage and Finnish Championships of Fish Handling.

For the first time this year the public is allowed to follow the tasting of the jury who votes for the marinated fish and herring surprise of the year. The jury members gather in the City Hall lobby on the opening day noon-3pm.
