The 20-year-old world heritage site celebrates its anniversary with “Spirit of Suomenlinna”, the residents’ festival!
When a UNESCO world heritage site turns 20 years old, the result is a three-day-long festival! During the event Väkevä Viapori (21–23.10.2011) there will be speeches, exhibitions, wide screen and cartoon presentations, guided tours, song performances, sausage sale in stalls, donuts made in the military canteen, church music, coffee with cake, tours of Suomenlinna meeting and conference rooms and a demonstration of the new gunboat which is being built in Suomenlinna.
For families there is in addition e.g. some cup painting and a flea market for children’s clothes.
The residents’ festival enables also visits to the coastguard and the customs, as well as the rescue station of the islands.
One can take exercise in the Naval Academy’s “Exercise Day” with some guided military exercise, followed by sauna, or in the half marathon organized on Sunday.
What is your way of celebrating this stunning island in front of Helsinki?
