Design District Helsinki celebrates the beginning of the summer with its own series of events – Design District Week!

Design District Week is a complete series of over 50 independently produced events organised by the members – theme days, guided walking tours, meetings with designers, street events and a design market! During the four-day programme the entrepreneurs and shopkeepers offer a unique opportunity for you to find treasures and special offers in the shops, as well as experience a multitude of interesting events around the district! Another cause for celebration is the seventh birthday of the Design District Helsinki association.

On Thursday June 7th and Friday June 8th you can get acquainted with the Design District’s variety of businesses and the people behind them. Special orienteering routes have been designed to help you roam the area by using an orienteering map with special themes – on the Jewellery theme route, you will get to know jewellery makers and their workrooms, while another theme route offers the chance to dive into the World of the Fashion shops and boutiques. Third route lets you discover the Antiques shops and Art galleries of the district. You can download route maps from the Design District Helsinki website. (Available in English from June 7th)

On Saturday June 9th the main location of events is the Pavilion, the central rendezvous of the World Design Capital 2012 Helsinki, located on the lot between the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Design Museum. The Design District Market will be held there from 11am to 5pm, offering design artefacts, jewellery, fashion, antiques, art and books for sale. The guides of the Design District will also be on hand to tell you about the district and its shops, and guiding you in the right direction. The Linnanmäki Circus School will entertain the visitors with performances and music. After the market We Love Helsinki djs will keep you entertained for the rest of the evening by spinning tunes at the Pavilion until 9pm!

Head over to the Pavilion also on Sunday June 10th for a brunch for the whole family in the Pavilion café starting at 11am! Programme also includes mellow tunes you can listen to while enjoying the delicious brunch and a story time for children and childlike grown-ups at 12pm and 1.30pm! In the afternoon 2pm-5pm dogs will take over the Pavilion – “Dogs meet Design” welcomes you and your dog for a fun Polaroid photo shoot! If you’re not a proud owner of a furry friend, you can pose with the friendly Blanco the Dog, a cool design dog. Everyone will receive a Polaroid picture and the best picture will be awarded with 100€ worth of Neroko products. All dogs will, of course, get special treats and water on location! After brunch, you can still tour the near-by galleries and museums, most of which are open until 4pm or 6pm.

The Design District comprises nearly 200 members. The area is full of design and antique shops, fashion stores, museums, art galleries, restaurants and showrooms. Located also in the heart of the District are the Design Museum, the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Design Forum Finland, a gallery and a shop presenting the latest trends in Finnish Design. This year, the Design District Week is strongly coloured by the World Design Capital Helsinki -project.
