Cloud City project at Punavuori
A modern, 16-storey residential and commercial building is being planned in the middle of the Merikortteli block in Punavuori, in the inner courtyard of the former industrial building. The Laituri exhibition introduces you to the plans for Merikortteli, a scale model of the project as well as other material.
Completed in 1938, Merikortteli was the first modern industrial building in Helsinki. The premises used by the Nokia Cable Factory now house several companies in the creative industries. The streets around the block are Telakkakatu, Pursimiehenkatu, Perämiehenkatu and Merimiehenkatu.
Planned for construction in the middle of the six-storey Merikortteli block, the next-generation, 16-storey residential and commercial building will be exceptional in terms of both height and architecture. The first eight storeys of the building will constitute an upward-widening base. On the top of the base, there will be eight residential storeys with a pyramid-like appearance.
The building was designed by ALA Architects Ltd. Merikortteli is privately owned. The owner has submitted an application to the City Planning Department for a town plan change to allow supplementary construction.
