It was a cold and stormy day.. or at least the snowiest day I can remember, that I decided to make my way from the other side of town to Punavuori to take a peek at the latest exhibition at one of my favorite small gallery spaces. On my way over, running across not just one but two cross-country skiers on the sidewalk of the hip and trendy Uudenmaankatu made me think that should have probably also been my means of transportation that day. Wintertime in Helsinki ♥
As the snowstorm was relentlessly blasting outside, the cosy and carefully curated space sure felt like a safe haven with its beautiful interior, art works and a harmonious selection of design items.
This was my first visit to the new location, as some time ago Lokal was still located a few blocks to west on the same street, closer to Kamppi. The new, larger space with its spectacular front window and the now much larger shop and cafe area makes quite an impact as soon as you enter.
As Lokal also exhibits and stocks a small selection of contemporary wooden furniture by Fiskars-based company Nikari, the warm shades of wood combined with a modern, clean design aesthetic bring a cool extra dimension to the new gallery space.
The current exhibition, Valoa! Light!, consists of paintings, photography, glass and textile works inspired by light in various forms. In Helsinki, light can be scarce mid-winter so for me any additional glimpse of it is a welcomed one! Enjoying art and a cup of coffee or tea in beautiful surroundings like this, feels just about perfect this time of year.
Through the ages, light has been a source of inspiration for artists and imperative in the life of a photographer or a painter for instance. Valoa! exhibition presents an interesting mix of different ways to showcase the concept of light in art – the glimpses, the reflections, the shadows..
Be sure to drop by before February 28th!
