#HelsinkiSecret Residence: Jiajia & Tina
Elisabeth Heinrichs January 29, 2016

From the beginning of 2016, the #HelsinkiSecret Residence serves as a base for international social media influencers reporting from the city center of Helsinki. The #HelsinkiSecret Residence is an initiative by Visit Helsinki and represents a globally unique form of city marketing utilizing social media. The residence comprises a studio apartment in the city center that will be open for the entire year, accommodating up to 100 international social media influencers with expertise in tourism, start-ups, education and the creative industries, for example. The #HelsinkiSecret Residence is a great example of the distinct, multi-sectored and partner-based form of marketing that Visit Helsinki believes in.

In the beginning of January, the #HelsinkiSecret Residence opened its doors to Chinese Jiajia & Tina. This blog post showcases their favorite memories of Helsinki.

Jiajia: “This is the second time for me to go to Helsinki during the winter time. Compared to the last time, I tried some local cafés and Finnish traditional restaurants, which were very special for me. Also, the light show Lux Helsinki was an amazing experience in Helsinki. When we took the ferry to Suomenlinna, it is very beautiful! Suomenlinna is just like a pure white world. After I posted the photos on Weibo (Chinese Twitter), I got a lot of likes and feedback. I think maybe I could find some interesting design shops next time. Although I had the Design District Helsinki map, I didn’t have a clear picture of this district. I hope the Design District Helsinki map can in the future add a brief introduction of each place with pictures together so Chinese tourists can have a clear impression on every shop.”

Tina: “First of all, I want to say this is a great project! It really gave me an opportunity to see Helsinki and it’s very important to have the freedom to discover the city like a real locals. During the week, we visited almost all interesting places in the Helsinki city center, as well as different kinds of real Finnish restaurants, either in traditional or modern style. Of course, as a woman, we like shopping and it’s easy to find some unique design shops in the city and also some famous brands like Iittala and Marimekko. I think the winter time is the best season to visit Helsinki to experience the beautiful snow world!”

Top 3 Places:

1. The city center, including the Cathedral, the port, Temppeliaukio Church, the National Art Gallery Ateneum, the Old Market Hall. It’s really beautiful in the winter time, especially the port. We were lucky to stay at the residence during the light festival Lux Helsinki and got to see the fantastic lighting show in the evenings.

2. Suomenlinna Sea Fortress Island
A calm, peaceful and beautiful place, especially in winter time.

3. Café Ekberg
A historical and elegant café, where you feel the daily life of the locals of Helsinki.

Top 3 Experiences:

1. Walking in a snowy and frozen world
I would like to say that the winter is definately the most beautiful season to visit Helsinki. It’s really amazing to see the snow world, the fog rising from the sea.

2. Taste the Finnish food
Two of our favorite restaurants are Juuri and Savotta. Juuri is a modern restaurant and the food there is just like a work of art. Savotta is a real traditional Finnish style restaurant: you see it everywhere – in the decoration, tableware, clothes of the waiters, as well as in the food.

3. Sauna
It’s a popular social activity in Finland and it’s part of the life of Finnish people. I like the time to sit and chat with your friends in the sauna. It makes me feel really relaxed. However, I like the common sauna rather the smoke sauna.
